The Canadian Peoples Census Data Infrastructure

Lisa Dillon, Université de Montréal

The Canadian Peoples project with support from nine Canadian universities has prepared for research roughly 40 million individual census records 1852-1921. In this paper we provide an overview of the new data by census year: number of records, personal characteristics available, features of particular interest, limitations and how to access. During 2023 and 2024 preliminary versions of the data have been available for testing by researchers at the participating universities. A review of this first wave of studies illustrates the broad potential contribution of the new data infrastructure as well as some limitations.
