The term “critical” has long been used in the social sciences, from the Frankfurt School’s label “Critical Theory” to more recent incarnations such as “Critical Race Theory” and “Critical Historical Studies.” But what does it mean to do “critical” historical social science? And what are its Others? This panel invites scholars to reflect upon these questions and explore the uses (or abuses) of the term “critical”, what doing “uncritical” social science as opposed to “critical” social science means, the different lineages or traditions of critical thought, and/or the way in which critique (or self-critique) enters into their work.
